Whitworth University

Whitworth, associated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), is among a select group of educational institutions known for both academic rigor and Christian commitment. The Whitworth faculty is committed to encouraging open intellectual inquiry as well as respect for diverse points of view.  Since 1890, Whitworth has held fast to its founding mission of providing “an education of mind and heart” through rigorous intellectual inquiry guided by Christian scholars. In all endeavors, the university seeks to advance its founder’s mission of equipping students to “honor God, follow Christ and serve humanity.”

Are all faculty Christian?  Yes.  All faculty and staff members are committed to the Christian faith.  All believe in the authority of scripture and have personal relationships with Jesus Christ.  Faculty and staff, from various denominations, demonstrate their faith in various ways.  Many attend Chapel, pray for and with students, attend various events on campus and mentor students through expressions of their faith.

Are all student Christian?  No. Whitworth believes in diversity of thought and ideas. Students are not required to be Christian, therefore allowing open discussion on many topics. Students are not required to attend Chapel or sign a statement of faith. We believe it is up to each individual to develop, nurture and express their religious beliefs. While it is not a requirement of students to be Christian, approximately 70% of the students are involved is some aspect of the Christian dimension on campus.

Are all faculty Christian?  No.  Jesuit philosophy respects many different religious traditions.  While the majority of faculty members are Christian, we also have faculty from a range of religious backgrounds.

Are all students Christian?  No. Jesuit philosophy encourages students to explore their spiritual paths, and we encourage that exploration through both student life and required courses in Religious Studies and Philosophy.

Are there any required Bible or religious classes or activities?  Yes.  Gonzaga requires its students to take Religious Studies and Philosophy courses.  Students will take three Religious Studies courses and four Philosophy courses including Critical Thinking, Human Nature, Ethics and an elective.  All other religious activity and coursework is optional.
